The forecast.

word up yo,vocabulary meme,nerd mafia
UPDATE! Thanks to a belle, a bean & a chicago dog — I’m a made woman! The Word Up, YO! meme is a blast….stretch your vocabulary muscles and join in!

The weather here lately has been hazy, hot and humid. Did I say hot and humid? I meant HOT and HUMID.  But the National Weather Service neglected to mention that with the advent of Hot and Humid, there is also a 95% chance of Rambunctious, with added spots of sibling hostility and/or violence. It’s shaping up to be quite a stormy week.

We had a long season of Rambunctious paired with Hostility a couple of years ago, and I found that the best way to deal with it was to turn off the television. (I know, you may gasp audibly here.) After the children’s initial shock (but not awe), and the obligatory Day 1 testing of the ban (“Can we watch tv?” “But it’s time for _____” {insert your favorite show –Nick, Disney or other silliness — here}), the children settled down and we had a lovely month (yes, I did it for a month). We’ll see how we do this week (I’m getting soft — it’s only for one week).

It’s my hope that I can disrupt this Rambunctious with Hostility pattern just enough that we can return to Hazy, Hot and Humid with a seasonal chance of Rambunctious. I’ve got no issue with that. In fact, the dogs decided they were pleased with the atmospheric change already, and have jumped, with wild abandon, into Rambunctious.

I find it a tad early on a Sunday morning, but I suppose if you’re going to embrace the Rambunctious, it doesn’t hurt to get an early start. You can’t really ever be sure what the weather will do next: I’m sure the Doodles have some concern that Ennui will roll in, and then no one will pay attention to them.

I really, really love how you made this into a weather forecast! SO creative!

  2. Amy Says:

Wow, we have the same weather at our house! This made me laugh. (Found you through the blog hop)

    Alyson says:

Turns out we have the same forecast, and probably the same sponsors for the Errand Games! I remember those days….now my oldest is 14 so I leave them home with her (and keep my fingers crossed that there will not be a rebellion in my absence!).

    Good times, good times.

  3. KLZ Says:

Ah, the hostility front is always the part I worry about.

It seems a bit counterintuitive, but shutting the tv off really does seem to help. Also, so does kicking them outside and locking the doors. Serenity descends immediately if you do that!

  4. Jessica Anne Says:

I’m trying the t.v. reduction myself (I’m not brave enough for an all out ban). I think it does work.

    Alyson says:

It’s not as bad as you think…although the first day can be hard.My kids are older (8,10,11,14) and so they’re a bit easier to turn loose and tell them to go amuse themselves. In the younger years, it was WAY harder on me!

  5. Melissa (Confessions of a Dr.Mom) Says:

Hmmm…now there’s an idea, turn OFF the TV. I have been doing it all wrong! Usually I turn ON the TV when I’ve had enough. Time for a switcheroo. BTW, Love your use of rambunctious…hope your were able to avoid that storm from coming in, very creative 🙂

I know — it seems counterintuitive, but I found it really does force them to get their ya-ya’s out in other ways….and it really does cut down on the squabbling! I ran out to the store the other day, and usually I would turn on the tv (but we didn’t) and I returned to find them playing Cranium together!! Who knew?!

  6. MKJ Says:

We’ve been traveling about but no matter where we are we’ve been having lots of Low Pressure fronts with a 80% chance of grumpiness. This unusually high % of Low & Grumpy seems to be coming from some freaky cosmic influence in the Orion Constellation.

  7. Lori @ In Pursuit of Martha Points Says:

    Congrats, you!

Now we can plot nefarious deeds together.

I don’t know what they’ll be, but isn’t that what being in the mafia is all about?

    Alyson says:

Nefarious. Good word. (You must be a word gal.) And, seeing as I do live in New Jersey, home of….well you know of whom I write….I’m all up on the kinds of deeds we could do. However, I’m hopeful they will all begin with a big Italian meal. Just a thought.

I wish I was that brave. I fear the torrential downpour of tears and drama should the TV ever be turned off around here. Great, creative post, though!

  9. CK Says:

Congrats, you made woman!!! And a whole month without TV, that deserves an even better hurrah!

First of all I want to say excellent blog! I had a quick question in which
I’d like to ask if you don’t mind. I was curious to know how you center yourself
and clear your head prior to writing. I’ve had
difficulty clearing my mind in getting my ideas out.
I do enjoy writing but it just seems like the
first 10 to 15 minutes are generally lost just trying
to figure out how to begin. Any suggestions or tips? Appreciate it!
