Domestic "emergency." Not.

File:Dirty dishes.jpgAfter yet another “clean” load of dishes from our “Smarter-Than-You, Ee and Them-All-Put-Together” Bosch dishwasher AGAIN came out of the machine NOT clean at all, I decided on the weekend to purchase a new one. Let me just say this about that — the purchasing experience — apparently no one likes their dishwasher, if online reviews are to be believed. This, then, is the perfect example of “squeaky wheels getting the grease” since it seems that only if you have hatred for your appliance do you write a review. This does not help me, the Internet-savvy consumer, who goes online to seek out recommendations for a dishwasher. If everyone hates all of them, what’s a girl to buy?

The answer is, Electrolux. They’ve done me right in terms of my new washer and dryer (back in the fall), and according to two different stores’ appliance salesmen, the E-lux is the only one they really sell any of, and it’s the one they both have in their kitchens. (Either Electrolux really is the brand to buy, or they’ve got a helluva marketing thing going on with suburban NJ sales guys.)

So I pulled out the MasterCard to purchase, confident that the store would deliver it within 48 hours, just like their ads state. Oh, clever marketing people — they reeled me in and I was dazzled by the newness of the machine and could clearly see myself loading it and emptying it a mere 48 hours from that very moment….only to be told that there were none in stock and I would have to wait 10 days. When the salesman heard my audible gasp! of dismay, he said, Well, if it’s an emergency I’m sure we’ve got the LG in stock…. and trailed off looking over his shoulder at the row of Lesser Machines.

There are two things wrong with his statement. First, what, exactly, would a “dishwashing emergency” be? I’ve got two hands, and four kids (that’s 10 hands all together {I’m good with family math}), so it seems to me that any “dishwashing emergency” could be managed quite capably the old-fashioned way. (As horrifying as that might be….) And second, why would I purchase the Lesser Machine when he basically just finished telling me that there was only one machine he was loyal to? I think I’ll continue to manage the dirty dishes with the “wash them first and then put them in the high-end rinsing ‘dishwasher’ ” by Bosch.

As I have told my husband before, and I am certain I will be telling him again soon: I’m doing my best to support the US economy. My Consumer Confidence is has never been low, and it’s sure not ebbing now. If only I can figure out a way to justify getting a new fridge….not sure that my hatred for the current one is enough of a reason.
